Thomas S. Kaplan in Conversation with David Rubenstein: Collecting Rembrandt

92nd Street Y – May 6, 2019

Thomas Kaplan talks to David Rubenstein about gold, tigers, and being “the man with most Rembrandts.”

The Leiden Collection, a unique “lending library” of Dutch Golden Age art named for Rembrandt’s birthplace, is the largest and most important privately-held collection of Rembrandt and his peers of the Dutch Golden Age in the world. It includes 15 paintings by Rembrandt Van Rijn himself—an assembly exceeded by only a few national museums—and the only works by Johannes Vermeer and Carel Fabritius in private hands. Marking this year’s commemoration of the 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt, Dr. Kaplan shares his journey as an art collector with the financier and philanthropist David Rubenstein. English.
